The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (“CAL FIRE”) has released updated Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps for Southern California, including Laguna Woods. The Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps identify areas as “moderate,” “high,” and “very high” fire hazard severity zones based on consistent statewide criteria and the severity of fire hazard that is expected to prevail. In updating the Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps, CAL FIRE considered fuel loading, slope, fire weather, and other relevant factors including areas where winds have been identified as a major cause of wildfire spread.
Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps are used for several purposes including, but not limited to, designating areas where California’s defensible space standards (including the forthcoming Zone 0 regulations) and wildland urban interface building codes apply.
State law requires cities to adopt the updated Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps within 120 days of their release. Cities cannot reduce the areas identified as fire hazard severity zones.
The updated Fire Hazard Severity Zone map for Laguna Woods is currently available for public review by clicking here and at Laguna Woods City Hall (24264 El Toro Road, Laguna Woods, CA 92637) during business hours. The Laguna Woods City Council will consider adopting the updated Fire Hazard Severity Zone map at their regular meeting on May 21, 2025 at 2 p.m. at Laguna Woods City Hall.
